Spices can be defined as a natural organic flavoured aromatic content of vegetable origin, obtained from tropical plants and trees in the form of roots, skins, seeds, flowers, leaves, sap etc. In ancient times itself, spices were playing very significant role in medicines preparation and act as flavoured agent, preservatives and perfumes.
India produces about 3 million tons of various kinds of spices and also that much of herbs annually. In ancient days this land has emerged as the eccentric of the spices business and later many great historic battles took place to capture the spices business as they were treated as a precious substance like gold & jewels. Spice farming is extensively done in the various parts of India. Each spice is grown in a unique manner which needs a different climate, soil condition, manure, pest control methods etc.
“Organic cultivation is a production management system which promotes and enhances agro-eco system health, biological cycles and soil biological activity”. Organic farming is done by replacing synthetic materials with agronomic, biological and mechanical methods. Organic farming involves certain techniques like Inter-cropping, mulching, integration of crops & livestock etc. which are practiced under various agricultural systems. As per ISO there are about 109 spices and India produces as many as 75 in its various agro climatic regions. It provides flavour, aroma and piquancy to the food items, pharmaceuticals, and is also used in perfumery cosmetics for various applications.
